Cosmetic Acupuncture

Hi There

I would love to hear from any practitioners who use Cosmetic Acupuncture in their practice, is there more of a demand these days as the media covers Cosmetic Acupuncture more.
Are you against the use of Cosmetic Acupuncture and is it something that you would never consider in your practice.
Any experiences or comments would be really appreciated please let me know your thoughts.

Hi there...

I am only a student of acupuncture (on my final year) so not sure if you are interested in my opinion...

I am not interested in cosmetic acupuncture in my future practice...i was actually really against it till last year, but i have softened to it, not to the point to being able to relate to it.

I am not saying that cosmetic acupuncture should not exist, it is more than legitimate if there is the demand for it and it works, i just wish it had a different name...that the link to chinese medicine wouldn't be made.

Because that is not chinese medicine. Not the rich chinese medicine from the classics, not the one that survived thanks to the hard work of single doctors with their unique approach. Maybe it can somehow relate to TCM, but that's an invention of the 50's...so...

I think cosmetic acupuncture is just an other expression of our time...of us struggling to come to terms with aging, of trying to stop time and look perfect all the time...i am not condemning it and i can to some extend sympathize (better than having surgery)... but is that chinese medicine? Hell no. And that 's what i want to do, so i'll pass on that!

sounds like a quick money spinner to me! just like all the other treatments that use the strenght of TCM to capitalise in what are already 'watered down' therapies here in the west.

Chinese Tui Na is far more effective , and the effects are better than botox, plus you get the benifit of the medicinal values of TCM.

Unless you had a specific medical problem that needed facial acupuncture i cant see why you would use it for a cosmetic value.

When will the western world learn eh!

If it's based on the same fundamental principles as Chinese acupuncture
and improves one's state via the same work with Qi, it is more than legitimate.
More, it seems much more benefical than certain branches of Western cosmetics considering the amount of various chemicals with potential hazards, and possibly in particular combinations which may appear harmful
to some people.
Some basic ideas from Chinese medicine like balance of Yin and Yang, may
be a revelation to Westernese, like eating absol-ly healthy organic farm food, vitamines, supplements, may yet make one more prone to cancer if one has 80% or more of Yin meals in diet.

I think it's perfectly legit. The shen (spirit) manifests in the face afterall and although I'm sure people operate in different ways, I was trained to still take the pulses, look at the tongue and ask some questions in order to include a source point or similar. We would still be treating the person as a whole as the face represents in a clear picture what is going on in the rest of the body.

I don't know about other facial revitalisation courses, but the one I attended also included tui na techniques. The insertion of needles is a great way to increase qi and blood flow to suffering areas. This isn't a new idea, it's been practiced in China at least as early as the Sung Dynasty (960AD-1270AD) for the Empress and the concubines.

If facial revitalisation is popular, people accessing our clinics are more likely to turn to acupuncture for other health needs and the more the wonderful benefits of acupuncture are publicsed the better in my opinion.

if there is a specific facial problem that needs needle point treatment it should be treated, other than that, most facial rejuvenation requires blood flow and muscle work. break down the old and renew!
chinese thyeology relies on more than acupuncture and should rely on what ever means suits the need.

I always look at the tongue for diagnosis, but rarely need to check a pulse unless i have conflicting patterns.

Again, i will always watch the seasons, constitution and lifestyle. It has kept me in good stead so far.

People have different ways of working, but the pulse is quite important in Chinese acupuncture as it represents how the qi of the different organs is behaving at that exact moment in time, whereas the tongue describes the health of the organs over a slightly longer time. The coating and moisture can change quite quickly (not as quick as the pulse), but the body colour, shape and cracks change over a longer period of time.

I also find the pulse is useful during a treatment, as you can tell immediately if the chosen points have had the desired effect.

I find that i tend to use the pulse to check how the treatments are progressing and also if there is a shift in a patients pattern between treatments.

I think facial acupuncture has a part to play.
A colleague of mine treats a patient for facial acupuncture using normal acupuncture points - as per our clinic supervisors advice - and seems to be having good results too.
If demand is there - why not encompass it?

The entire body is aging from the day we are born and trying to stay healthy to look and feel better isn't a sin, in my opinion. When you are healthy, you naturally look better. However, having acupuncture won't make you look ten years younger. Save your money for a facelift!

Having seen the results I'm now completely converted to facial acupuncture and it leaves people with a deep sense of wellbeing too. It has excellent results and people radiate a deep inner glow.

The needles relax facial muscles, stimulate blood flow to remove toxins (the body goes 'eek I have needles in my face, quick blood, go and see what's going on!'...
