she's also hoping that further down the line, she will be able to work inside of his mouth - now would that be the NMT that i learned during my certification, or is that a CST technique and something different?

thanks again!

I don't know about much about NMT, but my assumption is that CST mouthwork is VERY different. CST work will focus on the some of the soft tissues in and around the mouth, but primarily checks for healthy and free movement of the bones of the hard palate and face.

The hard palate articulates with the Pterygoid processes of the sphenoid; and the vomer articulates with the rostrum of the sphenoid. Any restriction in these connections creates and imbalance in the natural movement of the sphenoid and can create membranous tension throughout the entire system. (As an example, we often need to work the hard palate to help the body correct scoliosis.)

Your therapist should be able to show you all of this on a plastic skull so you can see all of this and understand how it all relates.

Good luck with the appt today. Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

cstbrian,
Can you elaborate more on the hard palate?

I recall JFB saying something during MFR-I about the hard palate and sucking your thumb...

But how does work with the hard palate help correct scoliosis? (Since I have it...)

I recall JFB saying something during MFR-I about the hard palate and sucking your thumb...

But how does work with the hard palate help correct scoliosis? (Since I have it...)

First, I do not mean to imply that if someone comes in with scoliosis it is coming from the hard palate. Our general findings about this came from working with people who have had traditional orthodontia (esp braces).

Any solid appliance or brace that crosses the midline of the hard palate, effects the natural movement of the bones. There is a suture that runs along the midline (anterior-posterior) in the maxilla and between the palatines. Like all the sutures of the cranial bones, there is a natural movement between them. In this case the movement of the hard palate bones is driven mechanically by the movement of the sphenoid. When an appliance, or braces are in place the natural movement of the hard palate at the midline is restricted. This restriction can in turn restrict the natural movement of the sphenoid.

The membrane system has attachments on the sphenoid (specifically the tentorium). One of Dr. Upledger's theories is that the restriction will begin to work it's way through the membrane system from the sphenoid. (This happens in a similar way to someone having an ankle injury and the fascial restriction creating a pelvic imbalance.)

One of the things that can happen is that the membrane tension could put an irregular tension in the dural tube creating a slight twist of the tube. If the body is not able to self correct this, over time the bones of the vertebrae may begin to twist in relation to the dural tube. This may create scoliosis.

So, by supporting the body to correct any imbalance in the hard palate and sphenoid then facilitating release of any twists, turns, or pulls in the membrane system, the body is free to begin realignment of the vertebrae. Other bones and fascia areas would need to be checked as well, depending on how compensated the body has become. But this is addressing the issue from the core.

One theory about the thumb sucking piece (besides the comfort factor) is that the newborn/infant/child is actually trying to decompress his/her vomer from the sphenoid. When the vomer is compressed against the sphenoid it will limit the sphenoid's natural movement. Our theory is that in the body's natural healing ability, it knows to try to suck the vomer down and away from the sphenoid to self-correct. If a newborn has a compressed vomer, he/she may have a difficult time feeding because of a poor latch or poor suck. When the vomer is decompressed, the suck often becomes stronger and more efficient allowing the newborn to take milk easier and with less air.

I believe that children who continue to suck their thumb have a very compressed vomer that has not been able to self correct. I myself sucked my thumb until around age 4 or 5; I have a very high hard palate now because of this (a perfect fit for my thumb). I have had quite a bit of mouthwork and my vomer continues to want attention and be released. Who knows what effect this had on me and my health growing up. How might I have been healthier if my vomer had decompressed early in life?

I hope this gives a little understanding of the importance of mouthwork in CranioSacral Therapy. And I hope I explained it in a way that is easy to understand. I could go much more in depth about the mouth, and the sphenoid and how they work together and effect the rest of the system; but I'll leave it where it is for now.

A teacher gave a great little explanation I use often when talking to clients about mouthwork. I pick up my plastic skull and talk a little about the relationship of the bones to one another and how they move. I then talk about how the cranium is like a puzzle and all the pieces need to fit together and move together properly. Then, I show how the mouth is part of this puzzle and how it fits into the workings of the craniosacral system. If at some point we don't check in with the mouth we are missing a huge part of the system and of the body.

Recently in a thread on my midwifery/childbirth education/labor doula yahoo group a midwife posted that she's had good success getting a stalled labor to pick back up by instructing the mother to suck her thumb.

Interesting.

How are things?

Hi Amanda,
I was just wondering how things were going for you and your child regarding the lack of smell and adhd/behavior issues. Has he started school and if so, how is that going? Have you noticed any additonal changes you attribute the CST to?

I have some other questions for you, do you mind if I PM you?

Ellie

thanks, guys!

so far no difference noted in taste and smell. but knowing that he feels a difference in his breathing is huge.

on a side note, he had his yearly check up on tuesday, and his ped. has put him on an appetite stimulant for a month or so. i have seen him eating more - tonight he even had a rice cake which is unusual for him. i've also been adding high-calorie, vitamin & protein mix to his milk.

daily steps...

we went back for tx #2 yesterday - she began the inside-of-the-mouth work. billy said it REALLY tickled! but it went well. we're set up for every 2 weeks. he is happy with it, and is allowing me to work with him more since then. actually, every 2 weeks, i get an ah shiatsu while he and his sister are getting CST! not bad for an 8 year old, a 6 year old and a tired mommy!

oh and yes, there was more ER last night but not as badly as the time before.

I agree with the above posters, especially about the CST work is very powerful. Very Good stuff!

I know this is a massage therapy board, but I'll post this info here. So few people know about the following and it is SO appropriate for your situation: There is a specialty within the chiropractic field referred to as chiropractic neurology. These are doctors of chiropractic who have taken an additional 2-3 years of study in the field of neurology. This can also be very powerful work. These doctors do more than spinal adjusting; they work with the various components of the brain as well. They often work with people who have gotten limited results from the regular chiropractic and regular medical fields, and they specialize in all kinds of conditions, including autism, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, head injuries and brain damage, memory loss, chronic fatigue, adrenal fatigue, etc, with phenomenal results.

Just Google "Chiropractic Neurology". When the American Board's website comes up, there's a Member Locator on the left-hand side where you can locate one near you, if you choose this option. I myself have gotten very good results from a single adjustment regarding a chronic swallowing problem, and I'm about to seek some more help down this road for some severe adrenal fatigue and mysterious accompanying symptoms.

I hope that helps!
Hugs

yes, emotional releases... they are necessary, and they are positive. and i know there are more to come and i am looking forward to that because i know that the accomplishment is so worth it. but it's still hard... which is why i booked myself an ashiatsu session a couple of days after his next CST.

he got so somber about two hours afterward, he was looking out the window as we were driving to my sister's and said " i wish cigarettes had never been invented. so many people would be so healthier. can you imagine how the world would be different if they'd never been invented? i would have gotten to meet grandpa."

You may want to try some Bach Flower Rescue Remedy,
just to help balance out the emotional responses, should they occur again.

As cstbrian already mentioned, the emotional response is not unusual.

It may also have been partially due to his
"excitement" prior to the work, along with all the stimulation his nervous system was recieving during treatment. The body has to learn how to settle into a new
way of being, and this in turn will often trigger a shift mentally & emotionally at the same time.

Let us know how things progress, and if it starts to make the hoped for shift in your son's sense of smell & taste too,
since they are so closely tied together.

Good luck with everything.

Adults can go through the same emotional releasing after a session. I can only imagine it's more difficult when it's your child. Just remember how your thoughts effect the situation. This is a positive change that is happening, try to keep your thoughts on the positive changes that are coming.

The body is bringing up these emotions to release them so that it can process them and work toward bringing the body back into balance. While it may be difficult in the moment, it's all for the good of his health.

no problem - he's a sensitive boy anyway, with a big old toughie inside that tries to come out on occasion. he's a finicky eater as well. since the tx, he has been very easy to upset - more emotional. he's also eaten VERY little - i mean, VERY little. he might have eaten twice yesterday. and some of that might be explained by us staying at my sister's and some of the food choices being different, but i made sure to have his 'specialties' available, and at every turn there was some sort of trauma related to food. (since counseling, i do know that there are issues there regarding food, we just haven't seen the upset like this in awhile)

today though, he's my same old son. but, we also came home today. so i think it's mostly emotional release with a little does of homesick thrown in. he's a MAJOR home-body.

so yes, the inside/palate thing is exactly the direction she wants to go in. the session went fine - about 45 minutes long. he went back and forth between very relaxed and very giggle-y... his occipital ridge was incredibly ticklish to him. she did say that his cranial pulse was "macho" (whatever that means).

we go back in 2 wks.

As a side note, since I am just getting to this thread, I also would lean toward CST as one of my first options. From there a good pediatric chiro (just for a few sessions) and a follow up with a good acupuncturist/herbalist for possibly a lot of sessions --- or maybe if they have something fast and furious in their repetoir, then a few.

I think the CST is one place to begin with head trauma. Without knowing tons about it, it always struck me as the go to modality for something like this.

Just opinions.

Looking forward to hearing how things progress.
