I think it's telling that the question is almost always phrased "are people born gay or is it a choice", and very rarely do people ask "are people born straight or is it a choice".

Why do we care so much about whether gay-ness is a choice or not? And why don't we care as much to "know" whether straight-ness is a choice or not? Unless you believe there's something wrong about being gay, why should it matter whether it's a choice or not?

Not to mention that it's an impossible question to answer, namely because it sets a either/or frame that pretends to encompass the experience of every human being. Most serious thinkers and scientitists have long realized that the world (especially the social world) is never as simple as either/or, and that the reality of human beings is much more messy, complex, and complicated than that.

During gestation the fetus is flooded with testosterone and estrogen. If the genitals are flooded with one hormone, and the brain the other, the baby will be born with gender disorientation. A female body with male brain, or the opposite. This only happens in 30% of those that identify themselves as gay or bi. The rest it is a matter of choice and environment.

That's an over simplified statement, but true. The specialization starts as early as the point where the embryo divides into 4 distinct cells. At that point differentiation of the various cells can begin based on age, orientation and proximity of the various amino acids in similar cells.

The 30% is also misleading but the explanation why gets long a complication. Nurturing does play a part as explained in an earlier post.

I read somewhere that it all depends on situations that you are male or female. Let take turtles or even crocs if he eggs are too warm they stay female and if they are cooler male.

Same could be said about babies. It all depends on what is happening with the mother. Stress, environment, addiction, etc.

Human are social being and way back they were not so up tight with sexuality has we are in North America or Religious Institutions. When a human needs comfort they will get it. It is a animal urge to be close, a human urge. If you spend all your time with a group you start wanting the group(I know I am opening another bag of beans) but it is true. Jails guys will do guys, women,women because of the sense and need for touch.

People will conform to the group eg. religion, who say that gays and bi etc are the outsiders but why not the other way round. I don't communicate well in writing but you just need to think a bit.

Question 1;

The norm is to be straight as it the best way to succeed in the imperative to pro-create. Off the top, I can't think of a modern society that has an unusually large proportion of gays.

In Thailand they have a large proportion of ladyboys who are held up as the third sex and given many rights.

There may not be religion as a whole that attract gays, but there are congregations where there is a sense of comfort and acceptance. Unfortunately there are many that don't.

Question 2;

Be careful with drawing a parallel between crocs/turtles and humans. There's a whole lot of evolutionary development between those two species and humans. Temperatures plays a much more critical part in the life cycle of the amphibians than in humans allowing humans to claim a higher rung on the evolutionary ladder.

As for humans in isolated condition, you may have a point.

I guess I see it a little differently. Whether we wish to acknowledge it or not being gay is still currently a more difficult road to follow. This is due, if for no other reason, to the fact there is no shortage of sexually repressed religious zealots or other assorted wingnuts ( see Iranian politicians, see US religious fundamentalists etc. etc.). Somehow I'd feel better if it was a choice based on preference as opposed to the luck of the draw. At least that way you sort of feel that the person has made a choice based on what makes them happier.

As before, it's hard to say when curiosity becomes taste for, followed by desire, then finally lifestyle choice.

Is it natural? Yes. Normal? Well, who's to say what is normal, as that changes with society's likes and dislikes or hopes and wishes.

My question is and I am asking for the purpose of discussion only. Why is it that most heterosexual men find two women having sex so appealing and those same men will turn away looking at two men engaged in sex?

Yes I happen to be part of that group of heterosexual men and admittedly it does leave me scratching my head when I think about it.

You're way off. Homosexuality has been around since recorded time. I'm no expert on early middle eastern culture, but I do know it was practiced openly in Ancient Greece, Rome, and Asia Minor; pretty well most of the known world at the time and their cultures florished. Before 2500 BCE who knows. There isn't much in the way of a written history for that period. No written text exist on the practice in ancient Egypt, but they did practice necrophylia. Hang you hat on that one boyo.

Homosexuality isn't grounds for extinction either. There are over 800 cases confirmed of regular homosexuality in the animal kingdom and over 1500 species are expected to practice forms of it. So homosexuality and extinction don't go hand in hand.

Your last point is easy. If you're not homosexual/bi, it's not likely you'll find two men making out a turn-on by definition.
